With the new year, I have planned to utilize this blog platform more and in order to do so, I will be starting a series of Q&A's out of a simple curiosity of how others live their lives. I'm always curious about how others work or where they find inspiration, & with the power of social media I have found an outlet to get to know many more ladies that spark my interest. To start off this series, I was recently asked to do a trade with Meghan Farrell of Farrell & Company. I received my black canteen bag in the mail and now it's my new favorite thing! She was kind enough to answer my set of questions as follows...
Where are you from and what do you do everyday?
I live in Portland, Maine and I hand make leather goods.
How did you start making bags & why?
I started making bags a couple of years ago because I couldn't find what I was looking for - simple, straight forward leather bags that had a vintage feel to them. Before then I had never really thought of leather as an approachable material like fabric or fiber. I was living on a farm in Northern Maine and was feeling creatively stuck. I became obsessed with the idea of making a leather wallet so I did some light research and found a leather store and purchased some tools and materials. After I made that first wallet I was hooked and haven't really stopped since.
What movies, music, books or other influences have you been surrounding yourself with lately?
I've been listening to Haim a lot lately. I love Don't Save Me and If I Could Change Your Mind. They also have great style. When I'm at the studio I listen to a Jollie Holland Pandora stream or This American Life. I have to say Instagram has been a huge influence for me lately. There are so many creatively inspiring artists on Instagram and it's nice to be able to see what other artists all across the world are doing.
What items do you always carry in your purse?
My F&Co. clutch wallet, my Iphone in a F&Co. Iphone case, Weleda Everon lip balm, a nice felt black pen, my moleskin, my vintage sunglasses in my F&Co. sunglass case, and a pair of headphones that has a microphone on it so I can talk to people without having to hold my phone. The inside of my leather bag makes me look like a leather fanatic, which I basically am.
Pretty sure it's the otter. I've always loved to swim.
If you could own a piece of artwork, no matter the price tag, what would you pick?
A piece from Taryn Simon's collection Contraband or from the collection An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar. I've always loved photography and her work in particular has always fascinated me.
Lastly, if you could have any super power, what would you pick?
My super power would be the ability to stop war and starvation.
I hope you enjoyed this short Q&A with Meghan! Check out her work linked above in this post, it's perfect. Look forward to posting more Q&A's in the near future.
