Not too long ago, I mailed a shipment of pretty clothes over to Katie's lovely shop, Backtalk PDX. Because I live in San Fran, I unfortunately have not seen the shop or met Katie in person, so I thought I'd send a few questions her way for her to answer. Internet connections seem to be more and more common these days, so I like to try to get to know the people that I work and trade with. Katie kindly traded one of her beautiful marble necklaces with me for a top, pictured here, and I love it so much. Here are the answers to the questions that Katie so kindly provided...
Quickly, where are you from & what do you do everyday?
I'm from Portland. I'm a true Oregonian, I feel calm and productive when it rains and i take my pants and go to the river/park/mountain/coast the minute it's above 60 degrees. I always start my morning with an apple cider vinegar, lemon, cayenne, ginger concoction. I'm always doing something.
How long have you been making Jewelry? How did you get started?
I work with marble, I started experimenting with it last summer when I was remodeling my bathroom. It is a very very difficult material to work with but I am always up for a good challenge. I eventually made something that is usually meant to put on the floor a wearable piece of art.
What music, movies, books or other influences have you been surrounding yourself with recently?
I'm very sensitive to music, it can totally make or break my mood and I always go through different phases. Right now, you can find me jammin' to tribal african beats. Before that, Heartless Bastards on repeat.
What items do you always carry in your purse?
I have a hideous men's black leather wallet (its temporary), NARS "Heat Wave" and a set of just three keys with a silver carabiner. I'm the kind of person who absolutely freaks out when they can't find anything in a big purse so keeping it simple saves me the anguish. You can call me a minimalist with anxiety.
If you could own one piece of artwork, no matter the price tag, what would it be?
I'd want to commission an insane solid bronze sculpture.
Lastly, if you could have any super power, what would you pick?
Maybe the ability to control time, specifically freeze it. I find that all the happiest moments seem to fly by the quickest, it would be rad elongate them and bask in the euphoria a bit longer:). But I don't really know, super powers would change everything.
